Paramakudi; Immanuvel Sekaran memorial day peaceful

RAMANATHAPURAM:

The 55th memorial day of dalit DEVENDRAKULA icon Immanuel Sekaran passed off smoothly in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district on Tuesday, except for a stray incident where two groups pelted stones at each other in Kamudhi injuring two policemen who intervened.

The day also marked the first anniversary of police firing on dalits MALLARS , killing six of them, when they staged a protest against police for preventing dalit DEVENDRAKULA leader John Pandian to visit Paramakudi and pay tribute to Immanuel Sekaran.

On Tuesday, amidst a thick security blanket, leader of several dalit MALLARS outfits visited Paramakudi and paid homage at the memorial of Sekaran. After villagers from Sellur, the native of Sekaran paid their homage in the morning led by the panchayat president Jayaraman, AIADMK men led by ministers S Sundaraj (handloom and textiles), who represents Paramakudi assembly constituency and Sellur K Raju (cooperatives) paid floral tributes. They were followed by DMK functionaries led by former minister Suba Thangavelan, Congress and MDMK, PMK, DMDK, Puthiya Tamizhagam and Viduthlai Chiruthaigal Katchi functionaries also paid homage. Members of several dalit MALLARS outfits also visited Paramakudi.

At Kamudhi, members who took out a procession to Paramakudi allegedly picked a quarrel with few residents, in the locality resulting in a clash between the two groups. Police intervened and brought the situation under control, but a sub-inspector and another policeman were injured in the stone pelting.
Schools and colleges remained closed in Paramakudi, while bus services were also suspended in the town to prevent any untoward incident.

Ramanathapuram SP Kaliraj Maheshkumar said that the day was by and large peaceful. "We made elaborate security arrangements. Patrolling was also intensified to ensure peace," he said.
Police heaved a sigh of relief as the day passed off smoothly. About 4,000 policemen drawn from across the state were deployed to ensure security in the communally-sensitive district.
