Poojari turned robber in Chennai..Women be careful when your husband is away!

Chennai: Priest tries to rob woman, nabbed

CHENNAI: A 36-year-old priest-turned robber is now in hospital after an attempt to steal jewels from a housewife failed and he fell from a building while trying to flee.

The police said the priest, S Ramakrishnan of Chromepet, was being treated for fractures in a rib and the right hand at the Government Hospital in Royapettah. Around 11.45 am on Monday, he went to the third floor apartment of V Madhavi at Anjugam Nagar 3rd Street in Jafferkhanpet. Madhavi's husband Veerarajulu, a manager in an automobile company, had left for work.

Madhavi wasn't expecting him, but as she knew him well, invited him in. She then went to the kitchen to make tea. Ramakrishnan locked the main door and advanced towards the kitchen, the police said. Seeing him there, Madhavi asked him to go back into the hall. Ramakrishnan pulled out a foot-long knife and asked her to part with her gold jewels. Madhavi initially agreed but then held the knife in both hands and screamed for help.

Residents on the first and second floors of the residential complex came out and began climbing towards Madhavi's flat. Ramakrishnan snatched the knife from her, inflicted a cut on the right hand and ran out. He saw people coming up and jumped off the terrace on to the second floor of the adjacent building. From there, he tried to land on the asbestos roof of a nearby temple, the police said.

"Ramakrishnan thought the asbestos sheet would hold his weight. It didn't and broke. The broken pieces inflicted deep cuts on his hands and he fractured his right hand and a rib in the fall," a police officer said. The injured Madhavi was also admitted to the Government Hospital in Royapettah. The Kumaran Nagar police slapped a robbery attempt and assault case against Ramakrishnan, the police said, was well-known to many residents in the locality and would come whenever called.

During questioning, Ramakrishnan said he planned the robbery as he knew Madhavi had many jewels in her house. She came to know him through one of her neighbours and often invited him to perform special pujas at her house.

Indian jailed in US for abusing co-passenger on flight Aug 16, 2011, 12.58PM IST

NEW YORK: A 65-year-old Indian has been sentenced to 12 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for sexually abusing a woman on board a Continental flight in 2010.

Ramesh Advani of New Jersey had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of abusive sexual contact, US Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement.

Advani sexually abused his co-passenger on the Hong Kong-Newark flight while she was sleeping.

According to court documents, Advani was seated next to the woman on the overnight flight on May 21, 2010. While the plane was over international waters, the woman fell asleep in her seat, covered with a blanket.

While she was asleep, Advani reached his hand under the blanket and sexually abused her. When the woman awoke, she realised what was happening and got up from her seat to inform the flight's crew members, the statement added.

In addition to the prison term, Advani has been sentenced to five years of supervised release and has been ordered to pay a USD 10,000 fine.

The federal government has exclusive jurisdiction over all sexual abuse cases that occur in American airplanes over international waters, because such crimes are not within the jurisdiction of any state, the statement said.

Hyderabad god-man cheated a Swiss lady:

Swiss woman duped by fake godman in Hyderabad

KOTHUR (MAHBUBNAGAR): Elizabeth wanders in search of food on the streets of Kothur in Mahbubnagar district. Allegedly duped by a fake godman who promised her 'spiritual bliss' and 'moksha', Elizabeth is a complete wreck now.

Residing in a dilapidated hut in an agriculture field on the outskirts of Patigadda thanda in Kothur town, 40-year-old Elizabeth was brought here by the fake swami, Gopal Nanda Puri Maharaj, in 2007. He reportedly married her. After allegedly usurping her property in the name of taking her on a spiritual journey, the godman reportedly made her a slave of ganja and other drug substances. He even gave her a new name, Induganti Devadasi.

"The fascination towards Indian spirituality and mystic Vedas brought me to the country. But I had never thought that I would be cheated. But I do not want to go back as my life is here with Gopal Maharaj," she said. Elizabeth came to India under visiting visa in 2005 from Switzerland as a member of Iskcon. "I hail from Basel. I want to settle down here after constructing an ashram, a goshala (cattle shed) and Lord Krishna temple," she said.

She sold all her property in Switzerland and handed over Rs 30 lakh to Gopal for the building of an ashram and the temple. After reaching Ujjain in Uttar Pradesh, she wanted to learn Vedic scriptures and study Indian spirituality. She joined one Bhakti Sheela Veda Prabhu as his disciple where she met Gopal.

He brought her here under the pretext of enhancing her spiritual horizon and started living together. "When he said that he wanted to build an ashram and a temple, I went back to my country," she recalled. She sold her property and handed over Rs 30 lakh to Gopal.

While people of nearby villages and allege that he is a fake godman, Gopal bought a piece of farm land on the outskirts of the town and started living with Elizabeth. Curiously, Elizabeth said she was married to him while Gopal insisted that it was only a 'platonic' relationship.

When asked, he claimed he had several disciples in Gujarat and other countries. "I am a scholar and a godman. I will develop a beautiful ashram and build a temple in the area once my land disputes are solved," he said. He claimed he hadn't duped Elizabeth. "I have always given her spiritual emancipation," he added.

health care fraud in US by INDIANS

NEW YORK: A federal grand jury in the US has indicted 26 people, including 19 Indians, for their participation in a multi-million dollar health care fraud and drug distribution scheme to facilitate the submission of false claims to Medicaid and private insurers.

The indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Detroit charged 26 individuals, including doctors and psychologists, United States attorney Barbara McQuade announced on Wednesday.

An Indian-origin pharmacist is accused of being at the center of the conspiracy.

The 34-count indictment alleges that 49-year old pharmacist Babubhai Patel, the beneficial owner and controller of some 26 pharmacies, concealed his ownership and control over many of the Patel Pharmacies through the use of straw owners.

The indictment alleges that Patel would offer and pay kickbacks, bribes and other inducements to physicians, in order to induce those physicians to write prescriptions for patients with Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, and to direct that those prescriptions be presented to one of the Patel Pharmacies for billing.

"Today's arrests and the allegations in the indictment bring to light one of the largest diversion conspiracies ever uncovered in the state of Michigan. These individuals abused their positions of trust and endangered the lives of countless people by illegally distributing more than six million doses of opiate painkillers and depressants throughout southeast Michigan and beyond," special agent in charge of drug enforcement administration's Detroit Field Division Robert Corso said.

The indictment further alleges the individuals conspired to distribute controlled substances at the Patel pharmacies, in order to facilitate the submission of false and fraudulent claims to Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers.

Patel and his associates paid physicians and podiatrists associated with the scheme, kickbacks and other inducements in exchange for the medical professionals writing prescriptions for controlled substances for their patients, and directing those patients to fill the prescriptions at a Patel Pharmacy.

Patel Pharmacies billed the Medicare programme not less than USD 37.7 million for medications purportedly provided to Medicare beneficiaries since January 2006 and not less than 20.8 million dollars for medications purportedly provided to Medicaid beneficiaries over the course of the scheme.

In addition to Patel, those named in the 34-count indictment are physician Paul Petre, pharmacists Dineshkmar Patel, Anish Bhavsar, Ashwini Sharma, Pinakeen Patel, Kartik Shah, Viral Thaker, Hiren Patel, Miteshkumar Patel, Lokeh Tayal, Narendera Cheraku and Chetan Gujarathi.

Arpitkumar Patel, Sumanray Raval, Harpreet Sachdeva, Ramesh Patel, Rana Naeem, physician Mustak Vaid, psychologist and patient recruiter Sanyani Edwards and business associate Komal Acharya have also been named in the indictment.
