AIADMK mayor candidate Rajan Chellappa, for allegedly distributing cash to voters at Chinthamani in Avaniapuram police limits.

MADURAI: A case has been booked against 200 persons, including the AIADMK mayor candidate Rajan Chellappa, for allegedly distributing cash to voters at Chinthamani in Avaniapuram police limits.

Even as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who was in Madurai on Thursday seeking votes for her party's candidates at a public meeting, promised a clean, corruption-free governance at the corporation and local body level, there have been allegations against her party men for bribing voters.

On Friday, superintendent of police Asra Garg received information that money was being distributed to voters at Chinthamani in Avaniapuram police limits. When the police officials rushed to the spot, they were informed that the AIADMK mayoral candidate Rajan

Chellappa and his supporters had already fled after coming to know of their arrival. Police sources said the case was filed against V Rajan Chellappa, two advocates Ramesh, Kalyani and about 200 others.

Meanwhile, 101 cases had been booked against the public and the candidates for poll violations related to the local body elections. The cases include the auctioning of the post of Thadayampatti panchayat vice president and that of the Pethampatti panchayat in Usilampatti union. About 185 persons have also been arrested and remanded in connection with these cases. The AIADMK mayoral candidate's name was the latest to be added to the list of erring persons.
